Editorial : Chief Executive Candidates Should Face the Public
文章日期:2022年4月7日

【明報專訊】Several days into the nomination period for the Chief Executive (CE) election, how potential candidates have been keeping a low profile is unprecedented in recent CE races. All parties are still waiting for heavyweight figures to throw their hats into the ring. After the changes in Hong Kong's political landscape brought about by the anti-amendment storm and the Hong Kong National Security Law, the experiences of past CE elections may not be directly applicable to this year's race. Amid the severe pandemic, the central government has emphasised that all sectors must be "united to win the battle against the pandemic" in supporting the city's anti-epidemic fight. Avoiding internal friction has become the main political theme now. It will soon be clear if only one candidate will enter the race this year. The CE has an extraordinary position primarily because of his or her "dual responsibility", i.e., having to answer to both the central government and the SAR. Regardless of whether there will be one or multiple contenders standing in the CE election, the candidates still need to face the public to let all sectors understand their visions of policymaking apart from soliciting the support of the Election Committee. There is only about one month left before the CE election day. Aspirants should make an appearance as early as possible to have more time to explain their political platforms and take the initiative to meet the public.
