Editorial : Compulsory Universal Testing Without Lockdown is Not Very Promising
文章日期:2022年2月24日

【明報專訊】The government has announced that compulsory universal COVID-19 testing will be rolled out next month. Citizens will have to undergo three rounds of nucleic acid tests. As the exponential rise in cases continues, experts estimate that the city may see around a hundred deaths daily by the end of next month. The authorities must adopt rigorous measures to prevent the worst-case scenario from happening. Compulsory universal testing is a step that must be taken. The Hong Kong government has announced that the "summer holiday" will begin early in March and April for all secondary and primary schools in the city to empty campuses for testing, isolation and other purposes, which can be said to be an out-of-the-box tactic. The authorities said the number of units in isolation facilities will be increased to around 50,000, but it is still doubtful whether that will be enough. As the Hong Kong government has no intention of imposing a citywide lockdown, people are concerned about whether that will undermine the effectiveness of compulsory universal testing. One can only hope that the pandemic will really come gradually under control by the end of next month.
