【明報專訊】Across the Chinese-speaking world, one of the auspicious practices during the Lunar New Year is to write fai chun (揮春) and affix them to doors and walls. In addition to increasing the festive atmosphere of the Spring Festival, the couplets also carry the meaning of praying for blessings and warding off evil. In mainland China, they are called chunlian (春聯) or futie (福貼). In the Minnan dialect, they are referred to as chunzai (春仔). The Japanese, Koreans and Vietnamese also have a similar practice to celebrate the arrival of spring, each doing so to reflect their own cultural beliefs about springtime, renewal, vitality and good fortune.
