【明報專訊】Hong Kong Then (2000) by Brian Wilson (born 1924) chronicles his colonial career from Cadet Officer in 1948 to Director of Urban Services in 1983. It is during these thirty-five years that he notices the forging of a Hong Kong identity, featuring anti-violence, freedom of expression, push for economic growth and anti-communism, which has first blossomed amidst the communist-inflicted riots of 1967. Having read law at Oxford University, and having acquired fluent Cantonese, Wilson, throughout his service, always reminds himself that a "due sense of humility" is an essential quality.
