【明報專訊】THE POLITICAL STORM arising from Sixtus Leung's and Yau Wai-ching's oath-takings could develop into one of the landmark political events that have ever happened since the handover. For it is not an ordinary controversy that the two lawmakers have provoked, but one that is linked to the "Hong Kong independence" movement — the separation of Hong Kong from China — which really gets on the Beijing authorities' nerves. Right now the matter is still being handled within Hong Kong's system. However, as the legal tools for prohibiting separatism are lacking, it is unpredictable whether the matter can be resolved in a way the authorities wish. If the "Hong Kong system" proves powerless in the face of the independence movement, it will be even more unpredictable how things will turn out.
