Idiom Magic:不容冒犯的人或事物 A sacred cow
文章日期:2016年8月22日

【明報專訊】To people who believe in the Hindu faith (that is, Hinduism) the cow is a sacred animal. Because of that, in India cows are allowed to roam (流浪) freely in the village and city streets. That has given us the expression a sacred cow, which refers to something - a tradition, a group, an institution - that is considered above criticism. "Betty's been the president of our club for so many years that she's rather like a sacred cow and no one is willing to challenge her decisions."
