While, during his first visit to East Asia, US defence secretary Ashton Carter bashed China for reclaiming land in the South China Sea, Chinese president Xi Jinping and general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong had a meeting and stressed that the two countries should work together to keep their maritime disputes under control and step up their cooperation.
