While he was enjoying success as a solo artist, he was constantly at odds with his band-mates of the CSNY - David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. He also faced the challenge of caring for two disabled sons. In the song, he laments his failure to find a heart of gold despite having travelled far and a long time.
