【明報專訊】PRESIDENT XI JINPING made a four-day visit of inspection to Xinjiang. No sooner had he and his entourage returned to Beijing than a train station in Urumqi saw a terrorist attack, in which three were killed and seventy-nine others, injured. It is clear from the arrogant terrorists' blatant provocation that Beijing is now faced with direr challenges in running Xinjiang. It cannot but be the top priority in running the autonomous region to combat terrorism. It is absolutely necessary to crack down on terrorists vigorously so as to safeguard national security and maintain law and order and protect life and property in Xinjiang. Beijing should at the same time adhere to its policy of "running Xinjiang with soft tactics" and "centring on economic development". It must strive radically to change the situation in Xinjiang, which is poverty-stricken and backward.
